I am into wood carving and wanted to work faster than a chisel and hammer would allow. My partner suggested an electric chain saw (she's really smart, so I gave it serious consideration). I did my "obligatory" online research and decided to give it a try. I really didn't know what to expect from an electric chain saw, but I knew it would be much lighter than the gas model I have. There weren't many reviews of electric chain saws, but what was available pointed me to look at three models with particular interest. I decided on the Makita 5012B. It was priced on the upper-middle end, but I relied ultimately on the Makita name in making my decision. I have used it for only one carving (to date), and I am thoroughly pleased with this tool. It is easy to handle, well balanced, and easy to clean/adjust. Its fast-moving chain makes easy work of hard wood. I would recommend this chain saw, whole-heartedly.

This is my 4th or 5th chainsaw, and my third electric one. I use it to trim/cut back about 50 eucalyptus trees on my property in the San Diego area. The saw seems very well made - a lot more metal components than any previous saw. I also like the sprocket at the tip of the bar that rotates with the chain to reduce friction. None of my previous saws had that feature - just a groove at the tip. I also like its small size as it is easy to maneuver through the brush. I don't have any large trees, anymore, so the 12" bar size is no limitation for me.

I do have one complaint. That kickback prevention cover over the tip of the bar does get in the way of making some close-quarter cuts, when there is not a lot of room to position the saw to get the cut started. I remember reading one reviewer who purchased a replacement bar without the guard. It is not that annoying to me...yet. I may look at how I could remove it, myself.

Smooth, fast and relatively quiet,,,as I said, a great saw!

Heres a formidable contender in the compound miter saw market with all the features you want in a high-end saw, plus one. We had high expectations for this saw, and we were not disappointed. Cutting is smooth, quiet, accurate and completely free of vibration, and the soft start is a nice feature. The 15-amp motor delivers 3,200 rpm, and electronic speed control maintains consistency under different loads. A common miter saw beef for us is a hard-to-read scale, but this ones large, clear and easy on the eyes, which we really appreciate. There are nine positive stops: 0 degrees, and left and right at 15, 22.5, 31.6 and 45 degrees, and bevels can be set from 0 to 45 degrees left and right. Capacities are great, too in the upright and center position, the saw will cut workpieces up to 4-1/2 inches high and 12-1/8 inches wide. A 45-degree left bevel still lets you cut stock 2-5/8 inches high and 12 inches wide, accommodating even the widest trim and moldings. The only thing wed change on this model is moving the rear bevel lever up front, but its not a big detractor. It does take a little muscle to set a bevel angle, but again, its not much of a mark against a saw that performs so beautifully. We like the vertical clamp on this saw; its quick to adjust and holds like a champ. Even the dust collection system, usually a notch above ineffective on most miter saws, is impressive, keeping the cutting line surprisingly clean. The thing we found coolest about this saw is a small detail, but one you dont see often: a built-in fluorescent light. It illuminates the workpiece cut line exactly where you want it, and its always right at your fingertips. Makita says the bulb will last some 2,000 hours, but we didnt stick around to check that out. Take care, though, as the bulb does get quite warm. There are a lot of compound miters on the market, but this one is definitely at the head of the class. Contractors and exacting woodworkers will love it.

"Over-rated saw for the money" 2009-09-16

My father-in-law has this saw and I have had the chance to put it through its paces (I own a Bosch 5412L -- a wonderful saw for finish carpentry). Unfortunately, this saw disappoints on many levels...

(1) the fence is so low that it does not support the work adequately, especially when cutting baseboards upright or crown molding in position

(2) when making a right-tilt bevel cut on the left side of a piece (a very common task), it is nearly impossible to hold the work safely and securely without your hand getting in the way of the motor housing

(3) the upright handle position can be awkward when making left-end cuts (especially for a righty like me)

(4) the twisting miter lock on the front takes about eight turns to lock securely

(5) weighs a ton, with no side handles to help carry it

(6) having the miter scale on the right makes no sense, as it gets blocked by the piece you're cutting

(7) supplied clamp has too many adjustable parts to set up quickly

(8) no venier micro-adjustment for "tweaking" angles to a 1/4-degree accuracy

Now the good points...

(1) smooth, clean cuts

(2) soft-starting

(3) relatively quiet

For the price, I think you can find a better saw with less compromises, such as the Bosch 5412L. For less money, the DeWalts offer great accuracy without all the bells and whistles. If price is no object, check out the Festool Kapex.

As usual Makita has a great product. The factory settings are good but always a good idea to double check them. The pre-set bevel angles were good but the pointer arrow was off so a simple adjustment and wa la! The smooth start is a great feature as saws without it cause a little problem keeping the mark in sinc when the saw jumps after you press the trigger, so that's a great plus. Wouldn't own anything but a Makita! Thought about the 10 inch but really no more bulk or weight considering the extra depth capacity. You can't go wrong with this saw.

I definitely would highly rate this saw for the jobsite. The soft start feature is very helpful and the fluorescent light is a must have. There are so may times when I am in a basement with very little light and have to make some cuts to trim something out. The blade it comes with is a surprisingly excellent blade. The way this saw folds up to carry is by far the best of all the sliders we've used (ex: Bosch, Dewalt, Rigid, Hitachi). The only complaints I have is the bevel index in the table, which is easy to get used to, and it seems to hang a little when the blade is fully extended to make a long cut and the fact that you don't get a 60 degree bevel like the belted sliders. That extra bevel cappacity is nice to have doing stairs. I have saws with lasers and feel they are overrated anyone who uses a saw day to day will always use the blade, it's proven to me to be much more accurate. Have also used the Makita with the laser as well and like this one better.

I read the reviews here at Amazon and decided to go with this model sliding compound saw. Unfortunately it wasn't the quality I expected. My saw arrived with a bent blade and bad linear bearings. I was going to send it back to Amazon but decided to opt for warranty work at a local authorized repair center (30 miles away). Amazon, for their part, did make a price adjustment along with a great instant discount at the beginning of the sale. I decided it was worth the hassle to have it fixed under warranty. I'm pleased with how Amazon helped with the post-sale problems. The repair center currently fixing my saw is also a big plus for Makita's reputation. That's why I'm giving this saw a 3-star review, it could have been a lot worse. Will I buy another Makita product? I'm not sure. Time will tell if this saw goes the distance after being fixed. I really believe I just happened to get the one that had problems.

Purchased saw a couple years ago but just getting around to writing a review. I'm not a professional carpenter just a DIYer and use the saw occasionally for small projects. Saw has a nice smooth start so it doesn't jump when you pull the trigger. By being a slider it is able to make a 90 degree cross cut of twelve inches which has come in handy. I got the saw at a great sale price from Amazon and delivery was fine.

We use it for anything from cutting framing lumber or fine trim to vinyl siding. Only downside to buying online is the shipping packaging needs to be re-thought. "WARNING: Good saw, terrible miter slots" 2009-09-02

I've been using this saw for about a year, and it holds up well and cuts well ... but the slots for miter bars are horrible. They're skinnier than the standard 3/4" slots on most saws, and not as deep, so they can't accommodate standard miter gauges and other accessories like featherboards. And since the table top is aluminum and not steel, you can't use magnetic featherboards, either. If you want to do something more than simple cuts where precision isn't important, my advice is to shop around for a saw with standard miter slots.

I have owned this saw for over 10 years. It is used for wood working and home improvement stuff. the saw produces cuts that amaze me. The accuracy is superb. However I always use a top of the line Thin Kerf ripping blade. Thin Kerf is the only way to go on a saw of this size. When the blade gets worn out, it must be replaced. If you buy it, You will get more value than you paid for. Aside from the blade upgrade, I put some locking swivel casters on the fixed stand and it is super easy to move around my garage as needed. I also use a dust collector with it. What a health saver. When I used it without dust collection and without a mask, I got sick. so at the very least use a mask. With dust collection, you get almost no mess and a healthier work environment.

So, if this saw suits your available work space go for it. If you have ample space and a much larger budget, get something bigger. Keep in mind, this saw does its job most excellent, and I usually cut PADOUK And other hard Thick Stock up to 8 feet long.

I used this saw in the past for jobsite work. It worked well. I have had no problems with it. The fence is definetly lacking for precise work, however for any rough work it works well. The included stand is fine for workshop use but otherwise would be a major pain to move around and is heavy. If you want to buy a saw for fine woodworking, I highly recommend you purchase a more expensive saw. For a portable, I would buy the dewalt model over this one. The major reason being the fence. My rating is for a portable saw for rougher work.

"Irreplaceable for tight spots and finish work" 2009-12-03

I am a renovation contractor and have had this saw in my arsenal since it was first introduced. To this day, I can not find a tool that will do what this saw does! I use it to cut square holes ( that is to say, not round)in floor and wall tile, Plaster (even w/metal lath), drywall, paneling, wood flooring and trim, etc.

It's low rpm's make it wonderful to go into a customers house and retrofit something knowing that there will not be a plume of dust. Blades I use most often are the carbide tipped wood blade and the diamond tipped anything else blade.

It's quiet, easy to control, no cords and usually no need for a vaccuum.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the power and battery life of this trim saw. I have used it on soft woods as a trim saw but also to make openings in 3/8" plywood where I did not feel safe using a full sized circular saw (in case of kickback I did not want to get thrown off the ladder). This saw just keeps going and going. It does take quite a while to recharge the battery when it is drained so a second battery is an important consideration.

I have not found any blades designed for plastic sheet for this size saw but if the blade is put on backwards so the back of the teeth hit the sheet it can work well even with brittle acrylic sheet materials.

I would caution against loaning it out as you will have a hard time getting it back.

To save reading/typing, I'll echo what M/M Larsen, Martin, and Takahashi all said. I bought mine for the exact reason of M. Larsen....

Additionally, I was in the water intrusion forensics in the mid-90s and saw someone use it on stucco to line out where to break out the stucco. They had multiple batteries and back then, the saw was a wonder.

People have to remember that in the early-mid-90s, 9.6v was state of the art. The saw seems so under powered now, but back then, it was one of the first of its kind. Makita does make a 14.4v unit.

Longevity: I used mine on site over several years and 40 water intrusion forensic jobs...inside and outside (mostly for drywall, though), and I have the original one I bought in 1996. I bought a little tool box for it and have been soooooo happy.

I retro-fitted the masonry water-drip kit and have cut tile, flagstone, brick, maybe thin concrete, and most recently....a granite countertop--all counter to "opinion" I heard today from a Home Depot whiz. Where other saws don't fit, this one does (heads in, not the long tail-end) with much less chance of overcutting--kind of important on one-time-get-it-right cuts.

It isn't good for plunge cutting (not a surprise---other saws are designed for that), and the batteries don't last long if you're doing heavy cutting. But for small, fine cuts...

Foot stomp: like the others said... get a carbide blade. Oh, charge the battery before using it "out of the box."

Bought this as a replacement for one I wore out after many, many years of service. Handy for lots of small jobs, from sheetrock cutouts to shingling sidewalls. Be aware of the kick-back it is pretty strong. All the controls for adjustments are easy to use.

I really dig makita tools and have almost exclusivly makita and milwaukee gear. I am a genuine tool junkie and if I dont have one you dont need it. I was amazed when I saw this thing and really bought it almost as a novelty,I mean this is real toolman bling bling. You dont have everything until you have a cordless powerhack..chuckle chuckle....but this buddie came and no sooner arived than I had uses for it. pipe..rebar..locks..angle iron... you name it, a lot of jobs I ordinarily grab a sawzall and a metal blade for can be done with a lot more finess with this saw and it seems to have plenty of power for long enough.The l.e.d light is a nice touch as well. I gotta give Makita 5 blings for coming up with this one....So after you have everything else....

I use these type of reviews to make buying decisions,so should pass on my thoughts. Great saw for timber beams. I did get better results with a freud carbide tip, thin kerf blade, but that is only to be expected versus non carbide blade. great ergonomics for holding saw. It is kind of heavy, but really just a large circular saw. The only issue, which is prob issue with any large saw, is that the act of setting the saw down, pushes on the blade adjustment plate, and after 30 or so cuts, needs a slight re squaring of the blade. Not a big deal, but i am sure it happens because of the heft of the saw. take a second and readjust and back in business with square cuts.

This is the only way to make smooth cuts on 6x material. I don't have too much trouble with the safety button as others have mentioned. A clamp down guide is a must for such a big saw. It kicks when starting so I hold it slightly away from the cut when turning it on. I find that covering the wood with a piece of wax paper makes it much easier to slide.

I purchased this saw to cut several 4x4 landscaping timbers to outline a driveway along with a variety of mulch beds. This saw is a beast. The two handles are definitely needed to control it. Positioning the saw to begin the cut and turning it on in conjunction with depressing the safety button is definitely a challenge as other reviewers have stated. However, once you develop a technique it becomes less burdensome. The saw does not have a soft start feature and will jerk when first turned on. It also is equipped with an electric brake which performs as expected. The 32 tooth stock blade is OK for rough cuts. The blade stabilizer is effective in preventing excessive runout. With the stock blade the saw will bog down if you force the cut and not let the tool do its job. But it still is a fine tool for making cuts on wood with such large dimensions. I constructed some jigs to make the alignments of my 90 and 45 degree cuts much easier. Leveling the saw to the stand was an issue but took litle time. Once leveled, no other adjustments are ever neccessary (with the same saw). It's quiet easy to remove the table from the stand and shim, as required, with washers.

I really like the size and features of the Makita 5008MGA 8-1/4" circular saw but I must have received the one bad one. On the second use, the "C.S.N. BOLT" - tightens the saw after you adjust the depth - broke. I extracted the bolt and could clearly see the wide flat end had simply torn off. I can only guess it was a bad weld or some other manufacturing defect. I'll have to mail order a new bolt. Not a good way experience after only two weeks and two uses.

I found myself with a lot of 3 inch thick material, so looked for a saw capable of sawing it in one pass. This saw seemed promising. It's wonderful! It has a nice heavy base plate (not some whimpy stamped thing), cuts a full 3inch deep, marked adjustments for depth, bevel cuts to 50 degrees (with auto stops at 22.5 and 45), plenty of power, and not noticably heavier than my usual saw. And did I mention the light illuminating the blade? Now I'm using it for everything.

For the extra depth capacity that you get with this 8.25-inch saw, I was surprised how light it is! (It weights the same as my 7.25-inch saw and even it is light for its class). I also like this saw because the cut line is easy to see. These might seem like small things but by the end of a working day they become significant! It's nice that the rip fence is included; my other circular saws didn't come with a rip fence and even if I wanted to buy one they are hard to find (at least where I am). I'll be doing a roof soon and I am looking forward to using this saw for the rafters. In fact this is probably the only saw I will need!

After spending a couple of weeks looking at circular saws by everyone from Craftsman to Festool, I selected this one.

In the past I have tended to buy Milwaukee or Porter Cable, but their saws either didn't have the features I wanted, or the quality didn't make the "cut". I wanted a high quality, well finished, and well engineered saw that I could rely on for many years to come. I also wanted blade braking, and I thought an illuminated blade path would be nice for those times when the work might not be well lit. And finally, because I would sometimes be losing some cut depth to having the saw mounted on top of a cutting sled, I wanted an 8" saw. All of these factors led me to make the leap and buy my very first Makita product.

Having made my choice, and being anxious to get started on some much needed home repairs on a weekend when I had some help available, I ordered the saw for next day delivery, and received it on Friday morning. By Friday afternoon it was hard at work. So how did it perform?

First, the saw is pretty quiet, to the degree that any circular saw is ever quiet. Perhaps it would be better to say it wasn't as incredibly loud as some.

Cutting with this saw was effortless. There was the sense that I was simply sliding the saw across the surface, and that the cutting that occurred was some sort of surprising, and wholly unrelated, coincidence. In other words, it was as effortless as one could ever hope for.

I was using the saw with an undersized 71/4" Freud blade I already had on hand, so it is hard for me to speak to the accuracy of the depth scale, and I wasn't making any precision cuts anyway. But adding in the 1/2" fudge factor for the difference between an 8-1/4" blade and a 7-1/4" blade seemed to give the result I was shooting for. The blade brake seemed to work reasonably well, although I don't have any experience with other braked saws for comparison. The lighting was moderately helpful when I was working underneath a structure in reduced illumination.

Now for the downside. First, unlike its smaller and nearly identical sibling, the 5007MGA, the 5008MGA does not ship with a case, and according to Makita customer service, none is available for purchase. (NOTE TO MAKITA: THIS IS SHORT SIGHTED AND STUPID. This isn't a cheap saw. Not providing a way to protect it during storage and transport is just poor. Please start offering a case and I promise I will buy it.)

I was also VERY disappointed to discover that the saw was built in China. I have never had a tool built in China that had decent quality. I hope this one will be the lone exception.

For those that are trying to decide between this saw and the 5007, the differences I found are as follows: the 5008 weighs half a pound more, and is about half an inch longer. 8.25" blades are a little less common, but not all that hard to find. (You can substitute the 7.25" blades if you need to, and they work just fine in the 5008.) And of course, as mentioned, no case for the 5008.

So to sum things up, after two days of use I am favorably impressed with the fit, function, and finish of my first Makita product. I will be making follow up edits when I have done some precision cuts, and as I get more hours of operation on the saw. In the meantime, if anyone knows of a good case for this saw, please post a comment on it.

I needed to save some money on tree removal and I have a real fear of chainsaws. I bought this saw because I trust the brand and electric saws somehow seem less intimidating. That was a good decision. The saw is absolutely perfect for the size of trees I am cutting (3" to 10" thick). It is also incredibly quiet. I was going to leave some of the bigger trees to the arborist but now I will just cut the trees I want and leave the chipping and stumping to the professionals for about a 1000$US savings after buying the saw.

Until I used this chainsaw I laughed at even the idea of an electric chain saw. I've been using gasoline chainsaws for over forty years. This little saw will amaze you. With a small Honda genset in the back of our Kawasaki Mule we run all over our place cutting firewood and taking out dead or dying trees. It will fall any tree of reasonable dimensions and will quickly clean it up. Keep it clean and filled with chain oil. We are pretty hard on ours and it shrugs if off so I'm guessing most users will never have a problem. And by the way, there is an enormous difference between this Makita electric and the electric chain saws you see for $[...]-$[...]. Don't waste your money on the cheap machines.

I received the hand held circular saw from a very deer family friend - and can't even put words to how wonderful it is to have it. It's just so utterly and completely handy and works as you would think something like it should. I was just so excited when I saw various replacement blades, for the tool, that I bought them as reserve blades, meaning I haven't used them yet nor this one (all being for various different materials). I don't see hand held miniature circular saws at stores but looking online, they show up here and there. I really wouldn't wanna be without one - is this model and brand the best one out there? I really couldn't tell you, but I'm completely happy with what I have but then again, I could "not know what I'm missing" right?

I have owned my current saw since 1992. I have had no issues ever! (Except changing the cord) Subcontractors will show up on the job with VERY HEAVY worm drive or cheap circular saws that are nearly impossible to see your cut line. I always keep a sharp blade mounted and blow the dust from armature quarterly when I check my cords for OSHA related problems.

This saw is so light, predictable and durable that I would never purchase another brand.

As far as I can tell, the item I was shipped was not manufactured by Makita. It arrived and I use it... and perhaps the company name on the paperwork is some sort of subsidiary, but I was sort of expecting something a bit more rugged feeling. All plastic all the time and not what I would call a precision design. Feels cheap, but so far, it does what it is supposed to do. Perhaps all protective helmet combo units of this type FEEL cheap. But perhaps not? This one does. That DOES MAKE IT LIGHT however. Perhaps that was the tradeoff...

Have been using this saw for a few weeks now rebuilding my deck. Works great. Excellent view of the cut line making cuts very accurately. Ergonomically the hand grips feel very secure and it's very light and easy to handle. Electric brake was a must for me, work in an ER where we see a lot of saw injuries, amputations, etc. No major flaws I've identified yet. I don't want to speak too soon, but I haven't had much problems with kickbacks or binding so far, but I'm very careful about my cutting technique and the materials I'm cutting and I'm hoping that that will minimize kickbacks.

I decided to upgrade from my 30 yr old B&D saw and almost bought the basic Milwaukee. Then I noticed they made one with a brake- which is a great idea. So I looked at the Milwaukee with brake. Then I noticed Makita also made one with a brake and indecision set in: I could not decide which brand to buy with the brake. To help with my decision I went to HD and looked at both- it then became an easy decision to buy the Makita 5007MGA even though it was slightly more expensive.

Looking at the Makita you can tell that the designers and engineers put some thought into it- it's not just a basic hammer-like power tool like the Milwaukee; instead the Makita has well thought out, almost sexy, "extra" detailed features for the user. The base is cast and has a nice thick lip on the blade side- the Milwaukee is stamped from ~.12" alum. All the levers on the Makita have nice rubber grips on them; the quick stops on the bevel adjustment on the Makita is also a great feature. Sure, you don't need these little features, but it shows that someone was thinking about more than mounting motor on a plate. The Milwaukee is the Chevy Malibu; the Makita is the Lexus; either will get the job done, but the Makita is a nicer tool. Oh, and this Lexus is unfortunately made in China, but the quality is perfect.

The saw has plenty of power and is as safe as any other saw so ignore the one bad review here wrt safety. The brake stops the blade in about half the time as my old B&D with no brake: ~3 seconds vs 6 (just counting off).

Negatives: As others have stated, the case is too small- you have to kink the cord at the strain relief which is not a good idea- the case needs to be 3" longer. The rip fence is too short to be of much use; this is ironic because the space for it in the case will accomodate a fence almost 2" longer. Fix those two things and it's perfect. It's odd that with all the detailed design put into the saw they missed glaringly obvious poor features on the case and fence. The case could also use some additional blade storage space although it's fine for at least two spare blades (all I have).

I was going to buy this saw until I noticed that the rear left corner of the baseplate is chopped off. When you are using a guide to make a straight cut that part of the baseplate is quite useful to keep the cut straight as the blade exits the material. None of the pictures of the saw show the rear left corner. I went to a Makita parts website and looked at the drawing for the baseplate. I see that some other saw manufacturers that have cast versus machined baseplates are doing the same thing. Makita did the same thing on the 5008MGA, the 8.25" inch version of this product. I guess I'll have to buy dewalt or milwaukee instead. What a shame -- this is otherwise a really great saw. I'd rate it at 5 stars if the baseplate was just rectangular without the missing corner. Makes me wonder why they did that? To save a few pennies worth of magnesium? Makita reps I'd love to hear the reasoning for that decision!

This is just a all around great circular saw. Starts relatively smooth, the ergonomics of the handles and levers are top tier, and the LED light/saw dust blower do a really good job of keeping you on the cut line. Adjustments are easy. The inclusion of the rip guide is a nice touch (other saws like some DeWalts expect you to pay extra for them). Very pleased w/ this purchase.

"A quality chainsaw" 2008-11-04

I was looking for a saw that approached the quality of a professional-level machine, since it became evident as I attempted to clean up after Hurricane Ike that my small gas and electric homeowner saws were not up to the task. I selected the DCS510-18 because it was avaiable through Prime, touted its low vibration and high power-to-weight ratio, and it was branded by Makita. I knew the quality of their products, but wasn't aware of Makita making non-electric power tools. I gambled to an extent that they would not tarnish their brand by selling subpar products, even if manufactured by others.

The saw lives up to the power and vibration promises, and is almost elegant in its appearance, like one would picture a chainsaw made by BMW. I found that German elegance was not a false impression in the very useful first review written for this saw. I'm writing my own review as much to praise that first reviewer for the very useful information he provided as to address the quality of the Makita chainsaw. He identified the actual manufacturer and model number, and provided some very useful suggestions - which I have followed - to optimize the saw's operation.

"Power-to-weight ratio" 2010-01-18

This is a very powerful saw for the weight. A comparable Stihl is about 50% heavier and when you have a lot of wood to cut the lighter weight is worth the extra money. The saw has served me well cutting up many > 30" oak, maple and ash trunks and lots of smaller trees and fallen timber. The chain oil dispenser is leaking a bit but the saw has also been used extremely hard for several seasons. I have worn out 4 or 5 chains already and I have switched to a carbide tip chain (Really worth its hefty price!)

The saw looks really beat up but still starts on the first pull and runs like a champ. Only complaint: woodchips and sawdust packs inside the safety brake housing and can interfere with smooth running so it needs to be taken apart and cleaned out regularly.

This saw is a serious tool in the class of the midsize Husqvarna and Stihl.

Great saw! Took me a while to find a case for it since it would not fit the Stihl or Husky cases. I even tried the large boxy cases. I ended up getting a soft Echo case for it. There is some weirdness in the manual about using 2 different sized files for sharpening the chain but other than that it's not much different from other saws. It has a little plate that can be used to divert hot air to the carb for cold weather use. Though this is a large powerfull saw it is light and manageble. In the first tankfull I made about 30 cuts thru some really large oak logs!

I might get out there and use it again today!

From the reviews that I read, I was concerned about my ability to operate this chain saw safely. When I read the owners manual, I was even more concerned. However having used it now for a few days taking down 4 large Ash trees and cutting them into 18" rounds, I am happy to say that while it certainly is a lot more saw than my old Craftsman 18" 46cc saw, it is no more difficult to handle and control. While it is not Makita's fault, I did spend a bit of time looking for fully synthetic 2 cycle oil for the 50 to 1 mix, but I was able to locate a supply nearby. Using 91 octane gas is also a new twist that caused me to buy an additional gas can. However, I think it is worth it as the saw seems to run really clean. I definitely think it was worth the money.

As my 5th chainsaw, I must say that the Makita DCS6401-20 has been by far the best saw I have ever used. Since I purchased it, I have cut down about 30 trees of various size to include a couple large ones. Eventhough this was a little bit more expensive than the comprable Stihl, I am so glad I spent the extra money and bought this one. Like some of you, I struggled about which miter saw to by for some time. On one hand, a simple non-sliding saw with a 10" or 12" inch blade seems to be alright, and the pricing is reasonable. On the other hand, what if I need to make wider cuts? Is the higher cost of a decent sliding miter saw worth it? In this case, damn straight. This "little" gem is exactly what this 1st time home owner / avid do-it-yourself-er remodel-er needed. For 99% of what I need to do - decking, raised garden beds, shelving, coping, trim, etc. this little power house is perfect. Just, my opinion by the way :)

1/2 the dust created 1/16 dia blade only makes 1/2 the dust to begin with and almost complete collection when hooked to a vac.

The smoothest miter angle table of any saw EVER.

Dead on accurate (the smaller the blade the less deflection).

The only concerns was it does not come with lock notch for the travel position, I speculate that this is so you don't lock it at 59 rather than 45

Also you must cut larger base and crown on the flat, for base this is almost easier once you use it a time or 2. the instructions come with a chart for setting crown on the flat for all angle 0-180.

As a professional remodeler who doesn't cut crown often this is the best take along saw you can buy, and it will be the only saw you use 97% of the time. so buy it and barrow your buddies behemoth on the rare occasion you need a bigger blade.

Small, light, incredibly clean cuts. I had to adjust my bevel stops out of the box, but the small blade and a 6" engineer's square made it a snap. Smooth action and portable size have made it essential, my 10" sits at home while this one travels job to job. As a finish guy I rarely need to cut anything over 2" thick, I cut mouldings on the flat. This saw is perfect, you're crazy to consider anything else. Do yourself a favor if you buy this, build a small table with stock supports around 8" deep, the small supports on the saw allow wide material to roll off post cut.

This has become a very big part of my work, I have the Makita 12" compound but found that this is great for doing misc pick up work or smaller jobs when taking out the big dog is too much. It's really nice when you need to move alot from room to room as well as up and down stairs.

Cutting smaller trim on it is alot more comfortable as well compared to the 12". This saw has plenty of power, nice brake system and is actually nice to have side by side on the job with the other saws so you don't need to keep changing one saws angle all the time. It's just plain convenient to own!

This saw gives you cuts as smooth as glass in oak, pine and hard maple with almost no tearout on the bottom side. Since it has only 2" of vertical capacity I believe that its primary usage is in cabinet making. At least that is how I am using it. Its sliding mechanism is extremely smooth with no play. It gives you cuts up to 12" wide which are perfectly straight with no 'climbing' effect. Out of the box the blade was square to the table and the fence. I think that a table could have been a bit larger but my saw is mounted on a stand so it is a non-issue for me. Another possible detraction is that nobody(?) but Makita makes blades in 7-1/2" size but thus far the supplied blade proved (about 25 bucks if purchased separately) to be very good. Makita also could have provided two clamps for each side of the blade instead of just one. But I have yet to find a perfect tool...

I bought this saw to cut all the pressure treated lumber for my deck since my other tools (except handsaws) were not going to be up for the task. I picked this saw over the others available based on reviews from several woodworking sites. Every review site seemed to like a different saw but in general all agreed that the Skil was the best overall.

I passed on competitors models for several reasons: well reviewed Skil saws were too heavy and had overlooked faults that bothered me. The Dewalts, Boschs, etc all had quirky features. The Ridgid was excellent but had a diamond arbor which limited the blades you could use. The Makita was new and it replaced the outgoing model which was well received so I went with the 5377MG.

Pros:

- accurate cuts

- angle stop easy to set

- lightweight

- excellent ergonomics

- nice blade included (a Makita trademark)

- reinforced baseplate

Cons:

- no rip fence included

- startup kick

- heavier than a sidewinder

- slightly underpowered

I'm hesitant to call the saw underpowered because it's more powerful that my other equipment but I would bet that the heavier saws have more power when the saw is pushed hard.

Always get the black A-94530 blade. It's sharp, lasts a long time and is coated to prevent binding.

The Makita 5377MG uses a heavier duty rip fence that is gold colored. For some reason, Makita does not include a rip fence or securing screw with the 5377MG. These are the part numbers you'll need for that saw:

- Rip Fence 165153-3

- M6x15 screw 251858- 2

The screw is black and matched that older style Makita saws not the newer padded blue screws. Do not buy the skinny 164095-8 rip fence by mistake.

Note: if you buy this saw in the 5377MGX version, you'll receive a ballistic nylon blue carpenter's belt instead of a case. There is also a Makita 5477NB now available that is a stripped down version of this saw.

I was thinking that this was going to be too heavy for most of my applications, but it is NOT! You don't have to be The Hulk to use it. It cuts through wet lumber like butter, keeps a very straight line without the guide. It looks like a 57 dodge or chevy. It has the beam hanger (if you set it on ground it rolls over) which is awesome. I freaking love this thing! Nice thin kerf blade comes with it. I don't think I'd go with the other top brands for this, it is super light comparatively.

I'd love to know what parts that other guy had magically fall off, because I can't find a single fit or finish flaw with mine. This thing is built like a tank, but doesn't weigh you down too badly. I'm a bit concerned about the longevity of the lower guard spring, but for right now, it works fine.

I chose this over the Bosch worm drive model purely because of the lack of need to drain and flush any oil out of the gearbox with kerosene, and I have no regrets. It ploughs right through wood, doesn't jump around when it starts up and has a really steady base. Not sure what else you'd need a circular saw to do.

"Blade lock defective. What happened Makita?!" 2010-01-06

Before any tool purchase, i always do my homework and research any potential purchase. So, when i was in the market for a recipro saw, Makita was right up there on my list. Makita's have good reviews on Amazon, among other places. So, their Reciprocating Saw seemed like a no-brainer for me. I already own a Makita double bevel sliding compound saw and am extremely impressed with the tool.

Amazon had one at my front door within record time (Kudo's Amazon!). Opened the box, plugged it in, and was happy for 5 minutes until i twisted the blade lock to "unlock" so i could insert the blade supplied by Makita. However, once in the "unlock" position, the locking component decided not to retract into the "locked" position. That's it. It wasn't moving. Surprised, after looking into it further, i decided it was smarter to get a replacement from Amazon then to tinker with the defective unit. When the replacement arrived, again, i opened the box and, to my surprise, (2 surprises now if your counting), the 2nd replacement had the same exact issue! The blade locking mechanism was already seized in the "unlock" position!!

I am both surprised and confused. Makita's a good, reliable name. I've read the reviews for the saw. My father has used Makita tools and recommended them to me. I own a of a beast miter saw made by Makita (which i love). What happened with Makita's Quality Contol process?! I would like to think it was a defect in the manufacturing process when Makita's made the batch and it won't happen again. However, it happen twice to me. Not a third time.

I am returning both initial and replacement saws and have already purchased a Milwaukee 12amp from the local HD. I had to put out a couple more dollars for the Milwaukee, but the Milwaukee has a 5 yr warranty, it's IS90000 certified, made in USA, and the blade lock component on the Milwaukee does what it's supposed to.

I'd like to forget this experience with Makita.

This on lives up to the Makita brand: solid like a rock, good grip, sturdy blade change mechanism, no nonsense control of speed, angle of attack and enough room to feel reasonably safe while working with it. This is a demolition tool, not intended for your fine cabinetry work; it will eat thru a steel pipe in 30 seconds and rip across a 2x4 in seconds (nails and all) whether you want it to or not.

Like another reviewer, I bought this based on Fine Homebuilding's test of reciprocating saws. It's my first recip, thought I've borrowed others to use before. This has a nice heft to it, is very comfortable to hold and operate, and works like a champ. The day after it arrived I used it to tear through some walls so I could gain access to the attic space behind them, and then reframe the opening. It went through the studs a little slower than some other saws, and the blade is only just long enough to reach through ½" drywall and the wide edge of a 2x4, so I had to make a couple of recuts. If I did rough framing or renovation for a living, I think I'd go with Makita's top of the line saw, which got Fine Homebuilding's best rating. I have owned a lot of Makita and DeWalt tools in my life. This is part of the newest LXT Lithium ion-powered tools. This is a great concept, but seriously, 4 of the 6 LXT tools I own have flaws/problems that greatly impact their utility.

The problem with this recip saw is that the shoe just plain does not work. It is only decorative. It will not hold. This is an important function when you are trying to use a certain part of the blade or to adjust the depth to keep the blade from, say, punching through the drywall on the other side of the wall.

Also, the blade quick release is marginal. You really have to give it a good forceful close and wiggle to make sure it is locked in there. I have not had problems with blades coming loose/out, but others have. FWIW, I use exclusively Milwaukee blades.

Sadly, if you look at the price of $75 to $100 for this or the compact version (BJR182), then think about the hassle to ship this to a service center and back and then not have them fix it (because it is a basic design flaw), then you'll understand that they truly don't make 'em like they used to.

This product has 5 stars because Makita has a good product here. Then there is me. . . picking at the details. I have owned this saw for 4 years now, it has undergone daily use for 2 full years of the 4. I have only one complaint about this saw and a few requests/questions for future models.

My only complaint, and I have not seen any one else mention this, is that the blade guard is not a solid mechanism and slips back when pressure is applied. I hope that Makita can remedy this small oversight in future models.

Another question is can this tool be made any more compact? I have also noticed that a corded model Makita recipro-saw has some kind of anti vibration technology, can this be applied in some measure to the cordless?

This saw is still going strong and dispite the improvements I would like to see it is a staple of the cordless tool kit, powerful, light, love the hook and the light. It is a 5 star out of the competition but it needs tweeked to be the absolute best that it can be.

Unless the hook is important to you [62 dollars important] the BJR182 is a better deal. In addition to not having the hook, BJR182 has a slightly different handle and does not have the LED headlights. Same motor and transmission. I got mine for eighty bucks here on Amazon: Makita BJR182Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Recipro Saw. I suspect these come from dealers who break down kits to get you the awesome price (I consider that excellent service) since Makita states that the BJR182 is the kits-only version of the tool. By the way the saw is very substantial and powerful because of the new cordless battery technology. I have been conditioned to expect cordless to mean wimpy but that is not the case here.

I can't believe I have to give Makita a 1-star on a review. I own and use an 18V Makita drill that has served me pretty well (though I did have to take it to a service center and they replaced the 'transmission,' under warranty, with an updated one).

I currently work for a construction company that uses reciprocating saws, and uses them a lot. We cut a good amount of metal framing, door frames, wood framing and drywall with them.

Before I started working with this company they used Porter Cable 'sawzalls.' We still have one or two left that rarely go out on jobs due to the side-to-side play that the worn Porter Cable blade-mechanisms allow. For general cutting they will still do the job, but for making straight cuts across drywall, or precise metal cuts, it's time to grab something else.

Since I've been working there we've used Milwaukee Sawzalls, and we've had pretty good luck with those (they lasted about two years).

But these Makitas ... wow, what a nightmare. From the get-go we had one that threw blades out. Two of the others developed this tendency within the first month of use. After three months of use we really only have one Makita reciprocating saw that doesn't throw blades AND has kept its parts together.

On most of them the switch on the left side, in the black area, that changes them to 'orbital' cutting has broken (and those broke pretty early - either not being able to hold position, or just falling off).

The metal guard on the front to adjust cutting depth has broken off on one of our saws, and inspection showed the metal it was made of to be thick - but seemingly a cheap type of metal (perhaps cast steel?). The thinner guards on the Milwaukees are a real steel, and while we've bent them, we have never had a Milwaukee's guard break like the Makita's did.

We really like the speed control on these, when they work, but beyond that they have just been problematic.

To be honest, we have one Ryobi reciprocating saw (plug in, none of our saws are rechargeable) that I would give three or four stars for, over this Makita, and that's for honest and tough use in construction.

My suggestion is to take a good look at Milwaukee sawzalls if you want a saw for every-day construction use. For home-use I suggest you even consider buying the Ryobi - ours has been a surprisingly good saw.

But I cannot recommend the Makitas for even light-duty use after seeing ours all go south (except for the one - though we did have to use a screw to wedge even that one's 'orbital' switch to stay in the "off" position two days ago).

This is by far the best heavy duty reciprocating saw on the market. We use it to cut cars in the used auto parts business. There is only one week spot and that is the blade locking mechanism. 90% of the ones I've bought so far, and that's almost 30 of them break there. And they discontinued the parts that you would need to fix it. Usually lasts up to 3 months of really heavy duty service, which is better than the Milwaukee. That anti vibration technology is pretty good as well.

This is the best reciprocating saw that I have ever used. We just finished up deconstruction of a fairly large house and this was there from the beginning. We have had around 12 guys working on this house everyday for the last few months with around 10 or so reciprocating saws on site. This is by far the best one on site as voted by all those carpenters. We have filled 10+ 30 yard dumpsters worth of materials and it is still just as strong as and as favored as the first day it was on site.

The variable speed and orbital action are really great. I can tell easily when the orbital is off because it starts cutting at the same speed as other reciprocating saws. The handle feels great, however, it is a slight bit heavy and that is the only downfall.

A favorite on job sites, Makita's 10-inch compound miter saw has a highly dedicated following. Even though it's extremely portable (at 24.2 pounds), Makita's saw also boasts a super sturdy dual-post pivoting arm. A pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts. The saw bevels left up to 45 degrees and miters 45 degrees left and up to 52 degrees right. There's no lack of power here, either: a 15 amp motor spins the blade, plus there's an electric brake that saves you time between cuts. There's also a shaft lock that makes changing blades quick and easy. The miter has a smooth-action swivel, but the lock is of the older screw-handle design that's a little more time-consuming than the newer (and more expensive) cam-lock designs. This saw out of the box WILL NOT CUT A 2X6 AT 90 DEGREES NOR BEVEL A 2X6 AT 90 DEGREES. With some filing of the right hand fence top I could get the saw to lower itself and cut a 2x6 at 90 degrees by 90 degrees. Beveling at 45 degrees by 90 degrees was impossible. The blade gruard, nut etc. prevents the blade from penetrating all the way through the wood. Otherwise it is a light weight and durable machine. It bewilders me why Makita would make a 10" saw with a 15 amp motor that can't cut a 2x6.

A few years ago I worked in the cabinet shop of a custom motor-coach factory. We had about 12 of these 10" Makita Saws as well as a few larger sliding saws of various brands. We used them all day long to cut moldings and secondary wood to assemble cabinets, and never had a lick of trouble. Out on the main line, they even used the same saw with a carbide blade to cut aluminum extrusions for coach bodies.

When they finally started wearing out (after about 5 years of 10 hour work shifts) management replaced them with cheap Delta saws which where not nearly as tough.

I have been in the wood trades for several years and used saws of every major brand. If I was going to buy a small miter saw, the Makita would probably be my first choice.

Let me make this short: this is all the miter saw 95% of us need. You can buy bigger, fancier more powerful saws with advanced features but this is all you really need unless you're a full time Pro who does trim and molding etc. all day long.

It has a liitle "kick" at start up but when you make the cut it is so quick and so clean you forget it. In fact....I LIKE that little start up boost!

This is a well made, well thought out tool and looks like it will last a long time. If its like my other Makita tools I'm sure it will.

I'm afraid that I can't agree with the 5 star ratings some of the other reviewers have given this tool. My intended use was to cut 3/4 inch birch plywood to rough size to make the parts easier to handle on the table saw. I usually cut 1 sheet of plywood in half. The saw is grossly underpowered and can barely make it through 2 passes. I never expected it to replace a corded circular saw, but this barely qualifies as a saw. The blade typically slows dramatically and frequently stops during the 2nd cut - and this is with a fully charged battery. My model is a 12V - maybe the 14V version will do a little better for you. This is not a rugged tool, and it simply doesn't have the power to produce anything but frustration - and it's way overpriced. It's OK for the occasional DIYer looking to cut nothing thicker than 3/4 material. If you're used to handling pro tools, skip this model. Makita got this one all wrong.

Works well for what it is. However, don't bother trying to do a 45 degree angle cut on anything thicker than 3/8", or maybe 1/2". It won't cut all the way through. I tried making some moulding out of 3/4" thick wood, and found that the saw only went 2/3 of the way.

For straight cuts, it's great, makes a smooth finish.

Is it worth the price? Probably not, unless this is exactly the tool you need. You may be better off with a larger saw, which will undoubtedly be cheaper as well.

I have owned this saw for 2-1/2 years, and have come to find its unique capabilities indispensable.

Having said that, I can understand why some people would have problems with this tool - it is not for everyone. All battery powered tools must compromise between power, size and weight in order to achieve freedom from a 120V cord. This one is no different. It is a very small, very light tool. Its blade spins slower than other battery powered circular saws. Temper your expectations accordingly, expect it to cut at a relaxed rate, and you will be satisfied with it's performance. Assume it should be able to cut as quickly as a saw weighing 3 times as much, and you will be disappointed.

I do a lot of woodwork and home renovation. I own many professional quality tools including a total of 4 circular saws. Two are 120 volt models, and two are battery powered. The other battery saw is an 18 volt Bosch with 6-1/2" blade.

What I like about the 5094D saw:

o It is lighter and smaller by far than any other circular saw. I easily operate it in one hand and SAFELY make cuts in places where no other saw can go. Situations where it has been especially useful include working overhead, sometimes perched atop a high ladder; working in a cramped crawlspace; removing plywood and OSB sheathing material from the wall of a house, cutting trim and siding material.

o It's power to weight ratio, and perhaps more importantly power-to-saw-kerf ratio is far superior to most, if not all other battery powered saws. While my 18V Bosch sometimes stalls during heavy cuts, this little Makita has never, ever stalled. Like any circular saw, it will kick back if mishandled, however the result if much less forceful, and hence less dangerous which is important when working overhead or on a ladder.

o Low noise level. By far the quietest circular saw I own. No hearing protection is required when using this little saw (the only exception is that sometimes the material being cut may make a racket, but it does not happen often).

o Clean. Because the kerf is so tiny, this saw generates far less dust than any other power saw. The low speed of the blade ensures that little of it is blown into the air. I estimate more than ninety percent of the wood dust remains on the workpiece where it can be easily vacuumed or bushed away. When working inside a house this is the cleanest power saw I have, even cleaner than a jig saw or a miter saw connected to a dust collector.

o Battery life is very good. You can do a lot of work with this tool before needing a recharge. Also, the NiMh batteries can be recharged at any time without harm and, if you are in a hurry, they can be partially recharged and used.

o Reasonable cutting capability. As mentioned previously, cutting occurs at a relaxed rate (although far faster than you could do by hand). This saw will readily cross cut one-by boards such as 3/4" thick fir or pine. It also nicely cuts sheet goods. I have used it extensively on half inch thick OSB, as well as fir, pressure treated and Baltic birch plywood (Baltic birch is essentially solid hardwood). I've used it less often on thicker sheet goods but it certainly does cut 3/4" thick stock, although a bit more slowly than the half inch stuff. As with all circular saws, the underside cuts very cleanly, with the only tear out on the top side (although the tiny kerf limits this to an acceptable level for most work - use masking tape or other methods if required).

o Tiny diameter blade makes it possible to plunge cut closer to the line than larger blades can. For example if you are cutting half inch thick sheathing a 7-1/4 inch blade will be 5/8" beyond the point that the 3-3/8 blade will be when you stop the cut. Sorry if this seems obscure - it is difficult to explain without a diagram - perhaps if sketching both diameters it will clarify things. Practically speaking, it means I can use this to make rough cut outs in sheathing or other material where I would normally need a different kind of saw (like a Rotozip, or jig saw).

What I do not like about this saw:

o While it is ruggedly built, and very durable (like most other Makita tools), the baseplate is simply folded steel. It works, but a solid aluminum alloy baseplate ought to be standard in a saw of this price range. Also the pivot points are not quite as tight as I would like, so there is just a little slop when adjusting the base height or angle.

In summary, this is a rugged, useful tool. I know of no other circular saw that can compare to it in terms of size and weight. I use mine often, and would not be without it, especially for construction and installation work.

I own this Kit. Comes with saw, bat, charger (NIMH and NiCad, 7.2 to 14 volt), and two blades, #78 for wood, and #71 for metal. Inserting the blade is a bit tedious, compared to the Milwaukee 12v Hacksall, that I also use. I bought this saw Kit because I have two drills and a mini circle saw that use the same platform. Saw is very handy for a quick cut, no "Jitter" if held firmly.

I've had this saw since 1995, and admittedly only use it a few times a year for home projects. However it uses the same battery as my Makita angle drill, which makes it super convenient. Its portability is one of its most positive aspects, just as with the drill. After 14 years, I finally broke one of its saw blades today, cutting through aluminum channel metal, which is tricky to keep from twisting and stressing the blade.

That's one of the negatives here... the blades are not standard reciprocating saw blades, but rather oversized jig saw blades, for all intents. Limited power = limited blade size and capability. Not that this rig doesn't have plenty of power, because it does. But that's why it can snap a blade; so a modicum of caution is advised - don't overreach the shorter blade throw, nor cut too cockeyed a line. And wear safety glasses cuz my blade broke off the tip as well as broke at the base, and that tip went aflying across the garage.

That leads to the only other negative. Finding replacement blades is no piece of cake if you want them from a stick built store. Plenty available online though. All that negative aside, I'd recommend this rig to any friend or acquaintance. And I'd buy another myself if I needed one, because it is so easy to take anywhere (upstairs, downstairs, to the yard or shed) and use without worrying about a darned cord, and it makes a lot quicker work of steel cutting projects than a hack saw; as long as you control its power and don't force the cut of the blade. On its own in not too thick a steel, it will buzz through like it was butter. Like any recipro, the width of the guide foot can complicate closesness of cut, but that inconvenience doesn't overshadow the great overall usefullness of this very handy tool.

I use this tool for cutting conduit, steel/aluminum tubing, bolts. The great thing about this tool is that you can use it with one hand and still have great precision and control of the tool because the trigger is only 5" from the blade instead of way in the back. Your hand grips the center of mass of the tool and it's amazing how light and balanced it feels in your hand. This saw is a scalpel and more suited towards finish cutting than the larger recipro saws. I've cut up to 4" conduit with this tool, so it is no slouch. The short stroke of the blade allows you to get into some pretty tight places while minimizing collateral damage. It is one of my favorite tools. The only thing I'd change about the tool is convert over to 12V and some of the newer batteries, but keep the overall shape and size.

I purchased this for a "self" Christmas present as I often find that I need a saw to get into tight spaces and the big reciprocating saws were too long or just didn't fit. I recently had a plumbing project and the saw worked excellent. I have used the saw for several cutting projects around the house and I'm very satisified. I do recommend purchasing a few extra blades if you decide to buy the unit...

If you read the Makita chain saw manuals (e.g. UC3500, UC3530A) they actually say to use their BIOTOP chain oil (but try finding that). The manuals offer NO OTHER equivalent. Since Makita also sells this "Commercial Grade" oil, one must assume that it's okay to use in their chain saws, too.

But at over $10 per quart, you're locked into paying through the nose, for the life of the saw.

What can I say, it's a slick little unit and does what it claims to do. I initially bought one saw. But after pricing out what a spare blade would cost, I ordered up a second saw from Tool King. It worked out as cheap, if not cheaper than buying the the blade by itself. Both shipments came with a saw, blade, safety glasses & believe it or not, a CASE! No complaints at all with Tool King. Like the other reviewer, I initally considered purchasing from DAMLOW PRICES as they were a few bucks cheaper than Tool King when you added in the shipping. Ultimately due to Tool King's higher positive rating here & on Ebay, I chose them. Glad I did. BTW, The saws that I received from Tool King came with a 36 tooth 6-7/8" metal cutting blade that uses a 20mm arbor.

34 x 52 pole parn burned down last week. I purchased this saw to cut up the huge pile of sheet metal scrap from the roof and side walls. This tool won't cut anything because the vendor "DAMLOW PRICES" shipped it to me without a blade. How can you call something a "metal cutting circular saw" if you don't ship the "saw" part of the tool with the motor. They should advertize it as a High quality motor with a handle, because that is all they sold me. They didn't sell me a saw. The vendor "DAMLOW PRICES" decided to remove the blade before shipping the saw to me. I have purchased Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita and even the cheap Denali cordless circular saws from various venders as "bare tools" and they always come with the blade. They are shipped from the manufacturer that way. This vendor clearly shows the blade in the picture and clearly indicates that the battery doesn't come with it. The product description states

"Product Description

Tool includes: 6 7/8" blade".

Milwaukee makes great tools but this one is useless to me. Now I have to pay to return the saw and I still have several thousand square feet of burned and twisted steel barn siding and roofing to deal with......."DAMLOW PRICES" is the only vendor I have ever purchased from that removed the blade from a saw before shipping it as a bare tool. It is unlikely that I will ever buy anything from "DAMLOW PRICES" again.

I have returned this tool to "Damlow Prices at a cost of $16 using the U.S Postal service. They sent me a refund that was $17 less than what I origionally paid them, so it only cost me $33 and I recieved nothing of value for it. What a deal! I have posted a photo of the 10 other "bare tool" circular saws that I have purchased from various vendors. Every one of them came with a blade, what a concept!

I ordered a replacement from "Tool King". I assume all is well and will edit this if it is not. Milwaukee makes great tools.

My saw arrived today (June 1st) from "Tool King". It was more than I expected. It came with a red plastic "Milwaukee" tool case that is large enough for the tool, has storage space for a spare blades and has room for a battery charger and spare battery (battery and charger not included). It also came with the "Milwaukee" metal cutting blade (mounted in the blade storage area of the case, a pair of "Milwaukee" safety glasses, and the "Milwaukee" owners manual and product registration paper work sealed in plastic. This makes for a first class package. When I ordered a "Bare tool" I only expected to get the saw and the blade. The storage case and the safety glasses were a pleasant suprise. I will take some photo's of this saw actually cutting metal and post them in the near future. (I have 20 foot long metal roofing panels that I have to fit into a 18 foot long trailer). "Tool King" will be at the top of my list for future purchases. They sent me everything that "Milwaukee" sent to them.

If you buy this from "Damlow Prices" you will not be able to cut anything with it because they don't ship the blade with the saw and if you ask them to supply the blade they won't, and then they will tell you to send it back at your own expense. That is my experience, perhaps yours will be better. My experience is that I am out $33 and they get to sell this same saw to someone else and make even more money. Since it didn't come in a "Milwaukee" box makes it me wonder how many other people have bought this same saw and returned it in its plain brown box.

I purchased this saw as a bit of an unknown. Seemed that it might be useful IF it worked as expected. No way - it's MUCH MUCH better than I could have imagined. First cuts through 1.25 inch thick wall tubing. No fuss, no effort, NO SPARKS. Smooth cuts with few or no burrs. Why haven't I had one for 10 years? Oh well, live and learn.

BTW, I am using this with the V18 Lithium batteries. It was designed for NiCads, but is forward compatible.

The knives were exactly as described and they installed in 15 minutes with no fuss. Test it out on some walnut and the results were near perfect. I reset my in feed and out rolls. When I ran the walnut board through after having jointed two sides,the planed side and corresponding edge were so smooth I could have not bothered to finish sand. No end snipe. "Ryobi AP10 Planer is good as new" 2009-10-22

I had some clear heart redwood 2x6 deck boards that I wanted to clean up to use to replace some decking. I decided to "tune up" my old Ryobi AP-10 planer that I purchased in the mid 80's. The power cord was in need of replacing because the jacket was falling apart. I still had the instructions that came with the planer so I figured out how to take it apart to replace the cord. I also gave the planer a thorough cleaning and lubing while it was apart.

Now all that it needed to was a new set of planer knives. I found the Freud C600 knives and ordered them. They arrived quickly and in perfect shape. Installing the knives went quickly because I still had the Ryobi blade alignment tool. The planer now performs just like new and made short work of cleaning up the redwood.

I took the original knives to the local sharpening shop and now have a spare set ready to go. The nice part about the Ryobi AP-10 planer is that you CAN resharpen the knives.

"Wobbly blade, poor flimsy fence design" 2010-01-07

Don't buy this saw, there are better choices. The first one I got had a lot of wobble in the blade. 2nd one was better, but still had some. My apprentice was cutting a piece of 2x4 blocking and he didn't have a firm grasp on the work piece. (My bad for not schooling him better.) The piece kicked up and hit the fence and broke it. The saw is unusable without the fence. Examining the fence revealed that it is attached to the part that slides in the track by two very thin and short sections of metal in the casting. Apparently the metal quality is questionable Chinese because it broke without much stress. They reluctantly agreed to fix this under warranty, but the saw has been at the shop for almost a month now because the part is back-ordered. I'm guessing this has been a chronic problem with the saw so they have no parts.

The saw also arrived not calibrated either for vertical accuracy or miter accuracy. Not sure the reason for the two-stage slide, perhaps to make it more compact, but it can be a slight hassle. Motor power is good, laser works relatively well and is handy at times. I would choose another brand for this price.

"Mediocre Saw" 2009-11-22

I am carpenter who recently purchased this saw at Home Depot. I thought I would go out on a limb and try this new model, hoping to be impressed.

Unfortunately I am depressed. After owning this saw for 3 days, I was cutting a piece of ash baseboard that ended kicking back and smashing up

the plastic blade guard assembly, tearing into the kerf boards, and worst, breaking off a piece of the reference fence (not the flip fence). I understand

that broken plastic due to kick is not an if but a when issue unfortunately, but I thought breaking off a chunk of the fence was to be frank..a bit lame.

I don't expect to have to replace the fence and re-calibrate the saw every time wood kicks back.

I can't say I noticed any issues with roller bearings being "bumpy" but I can say that the saw needed squaring from the ground up, which is typical and to be expected.

What I really didn't care for is the lack of a really solid 0 degree bevel stop. Every bevel angle has to be locked in, which is pain you can't just flip up the saw

to zero, it has an area of about + or - 3 degrees it wiggles in. The miter gauge locking mechanism seemed to be pretty slick once you get used to it. My only concern is

if it loosens up after a year or two of heavy use, could present a problem. The direct drive motor seemed to be decent, no complaints there. The extra tall fences

actually got in the way for 45 degree bevels, even when slid out to the very edge, I ended up just taking them off for what I was doing. Also providing you

need to read the directions for any reason, I echo another reviewers sentiment of them be really poorly written/illustrated.

Overall I would say this saw not marketed in my opinion for hard working no-nonsense builders, seeking efficiency/reliability/accuracy. I would highly recommend sticking with the other Makita models or the really great Hitachi C10FSH. These other models are tried, true and really solid saws. For $550 I think hands down you can do better.

"MAKITA LS1016 - MITER SAW REINVENTED" 2009-10-04

I am a general contractor and have many power tools. All Makita power tools I've owned over the years were state-of-the-art and excellent quality.

I've had many quality miter saws over the last 30 years by every manufacturer, Delta, Dewalt, Hitachi, and several Makita etc.

I've had 2 or 3 of the older Makita LS1013s sliding compound miter saws and were satisfied with their quality although I did not use them for crown molding. I've used the 12" Dewalt and 12" Makita compound miter saw for crown.

Upon reviewing the LS1016L, I realized that the LS1013 was not a good design at all for crown molding. The whole table rotates and the crown-stops only work for 90 degree cuts !!!!!!!!!!!!!! The LS1013 only bevels in one direction, and the back-stop fences are too low for crown.

The new LS1016L overcomes all of the old LS1013s short comings. I think it is the best by far or any miter saw I've ever owned. It does everything well.

The only negative side to this product is it's weight. It is a bit heavy but still lighter than all others.

"Great saw, flawed Assembly...Update" 2009-10-02

This is a fine saw but assembly is substandard and a critical adjustment mechanism is under-engineered. As noted in other reviews, the zero deg. adjustment screw is completely inoperative. It flat doesn't work. Also, the upper slide is (was) so rough as to make it unusable for fine-finish carpentry. Mitered skirt boards when cut with this saw look serrated. What else can I say? I bought 2 of these at the Orange store and they both had these identical problems. After very close inspection, it even looks like the top rail is MISSING one of the slide bushings. It's a shame really. Other than these deal-break issues the saw is top notch. My advise would be to stay away from this saw for at least a year until Makita can sort it out...

Update: After several months of wistfulness and longing for the Makita that wasn't, I bought the DW717 10" double bevel slider. I am quite happy with it. The bevel/detente plates are fully adjustable and so far it's been plenty accurate. It's been a long time since I've bought a yellow tool. This one, I think, is here to stay.

When my gas saw suddenly broke, I was in a pinch so I had this over-nighted in from Amazon. The saw came through with flying colors. This saw cuts just as well as my 42cc gas saw does. At 2600fpm the chain speed is not as fast, but the motor is so strong I can put more pressure on the blade and make cuts in the same amount of time- maybe even a little faster. That really surprised me. I made about 50 cuts on logs ranging from 6 inches to 15 inches. The last cut was as good as the first. Cutting 15 inch birch is a good test for this saw and it ate it right up. Harder woods were even easier to cut.

This saw would be impractical for felling and bucking trees with a lot of branches because of the cord. It would be excellent for occasional and emergency use around the home. This saw would be a good choice for commercial firewood if it's only being used to cut bucked logs down to firewood lengths.

And thanks to Amazon (and Fedex) for coming through with the overnight delivery when I really needed it. It cost a lot, but the product and the service came through to get the job done.

After going through 3 other electric saws (the last 2 Troy Bilt TB4516CC's) in as many years, I moved up in price to this Makita. After a year with the Makita felling several large trees and cutting them into firewood, I am happy to report I can put my recommendation on this saw. It is higher in price than most other electric chain saws but it works, can handle large logs, cuts reasonably fast, and has stood up to my punishment. It cannot compete with good gas saws but I hate the noise, smoke, maintenance..... so started using electric saws several years ago. Was concerned after 3 very disappointing failures that I would not find an electric option so decided to try this relatively (to other electric saws) expensive Makita - and have been pleasantly surprised at the functionality and durability of this product. Hopefully this recommendation is not premature.... I feel pretty confident this Makita is a solid machine that will provide years of service.

Ample power to cut 12" logs. I like the tool-less feature. You can make adjustments right on the spot without any other tool. No messing around with gas and oil mix and hard starting. Easy to take apart and clean without a tool.

After I had a professional tree service cut down two large maple trees growing too close to my house ( I hated to have them cut down but had no choice, the branches were touching the roof and some of the high branches were so heavy they were splitting and falling) The tree service guys *bucked it up* for me, which means they cut the branches and trunk up into pieces. I wanted the wood to burn in my fireplace. Many of the pieces too large, and needed further cutting. I ordered the Makita chainsaw, after reading consumer advice online. My first time trying to cut wood and use a larger chainsaw, (I have a small battery chainsaw for pruning), the Makita chainsaw cut right thru the 10 inch thick branches fast and easy. But when I tried to cut up the larger pieces of the tree trunk I apparently dulled the chainsaw blades. The cutting was not so easy and it got to the point where I could not cut even a small branch, the chainsaw blades got so dull. So after just a few hours of use over a couple weeks time i had to stop using the chainsaw and order a new chainsaw chain, which Amazon has for $21.--but I have not received yet. I did not expect the chain blades to dull so fast. I was just cutting wood. I don't know if the User manual for this chainsaw gives any guidance on how to avoid dulling the blade, or if it is possible to have the chain blades sharpened, like the large gas chainsaw blades can be...or if I will have to buy a new chain every month. I purchased the last one in stock at Amazon (so not a good indication). I had wanted to order two at once....

Perhaps with further use I will learn how to use the chainsaw and cut the wood without dulling the chain blades so fast. Also, the oil well runs out fast and has to be refilled frequently while cutting-- this contributes to dulling the blades, if the oil is out and you don't notice immediately. So it is necessary to check the oil level frequently...

I bought this saw in '04 and immediately started flogging it. It came through with flying colors. I used it extensively in the construction of my post and beam/strawbale workshop. It has performed like a true champion, it even survived abuse by my hired helpers. A lesser saw would have thrown in the towel and gone home sobbing like a school girl. The Makita is one tough saw.

I was quite nervous spending this much on a saw. After installing crown, base, and chair rail in our whole 2,500 sq ft house, I have no regrets what so ever. I was able to complete the whole project in 1 day, w/o this saw it would of been much longer. This saw is the best there is. It's made in the USA which is an added bonus, however helps me understand why the quality is so great. Would recommend to anyone in the market. . Hi, this is a PRO SAW and I am a retired all phase carpenter. I have used many of these Makita saws by various employers and have owned a few also.. The bang for the buck is here and this saw is very user friendly for the weekend warrior that has intense remodel or wood working projects. The balance is sweet and you can feel the precision as your work with it, 1/64" for finish or cabinet work is not hard to hit the mark if your eyes are that accurate...... This is the top of the line and there are more expensive machines out there but the don't hold a candle to this model of Makita. I bought mine Feb 2008 at a steal here at Amazon, don't know if it was a pricing error or what but I shopped hard using search engines for a month..... The reason I got one more new one, and the only one I own now is I figured it would last me the rest of my life and I also purchased a new home in the country and all of my older out buildings had no trim, fascia or corner caps and I used my Makita to trim out every outbuilding I own.... Such a sweet saw I did over 1,000 linear feet in two days. To enhance this saw you may consider purchasing a chop saw bench, I found a transportable light weight wheeled collapsible one that weights 50 pounds with a single roller wheel and an open bridged support table of 119" for material support. I used a well known auction outlet for my portable saw table and scored that for 135 bux..... I have checked the stop locks on the degree of cut and doing that with a laser gauge and the factory quick locks for common cuts has repeatedly come in less that one half of a degree...

. BUY THIS SAW, you WON'T REGRET IT !

This saw is feature laden: powerful, deep cutting, cast alloy foot (not stamped,) it blows sawdust out of the way (kind of,) and all the many features that have been highlighted in all the other reviews.

I particularly like 1) that the LEDs stay on as long as the saw is plugged in, and 2) there is only one power switch, not the usual power switch that has to be freed by pushing and holding a trigger lock. In awkward positions, I have had a hard time holding the blade guard back and getting to push the safety button. So, be careful those of you who are upgrading from a `two-button' saw because the trigger is live. It took a little getting used to relying on the LEDs being lit to remind me that there was no safety and to keep my finger off the trigger when positioning the saw for cutting.

I have used the current models of Dewalt, Hitachi and Milwaukee circular saws extensively, and this saw is hands down better than any of those. I use the saw every day,I have had this opportunity because my tools have been stolen a couple times(ouch)

The makita LXT impact and drill are so good that I thought I would try out this tool.

A list of what I noticed about this saw the first time I used it. I was astonished how quickly I noticed this stuff in use,

it seemed only all right when I checked it out at the store.

1. It has a silky smooth start up

2. It has excellent ergonomic grips

3. It is quieter and sounds better

4. It has an light to see your line, (much more useful than I thought it would be)

5. The adjustment levers function better and are easier to grab

6. Onboard storage for blade removal hex key

7. The angle adjustments and depth stop are easier to see.

8. It comes with the rip guide (much more useful that you would think)

9. The cord is installed to the body of the tool like they mean for it to stay and not fray

10. and does it ever cut smoothly,

it does not however have a electric brake, the 5007mga does though i believe.

This saw is on a different plane,

Thanks Makita engineers, you are making some amazing tools right now.

Had to Call Makita about this. The rip fense can NOT be used to rip measurements between 3" and 3-3/4". It took speaking to 3 people at Makita before finding a person that even had a clue as to what I was talking about. Had to go to Sears and buy a universal mount rip fence. Makita has still not called me back as promised. Very dissappointed with Makita on this one.

My 35 year old skill, as were ALL worm drive saws used by true carpenters has the blade on the left. We used to call the saws with the blade on the right home owner 'side winders'. I still don't like leaning over to see the cut. With the blade on the left you can see the cut directly in front of you and your center of gravity is directly behind the cut. This is a very nice portable saw, for a left-handed person! For that user, I would rate it at 4-5 stars.

Maybe I should be more generous than a 1-star rating since the picture clearly depicts a left-handed saw if you think about how you are going to use it. But come on... we're used to disclaimers on left-handed tools and I don't remember seeing any of the customery warnings on either the website or in the instructions for this saw. What's worse is that Makita doesn't seem to make a right-handed version of a 6 1/2" cordless saw! What is Makita thinking?

My AC powered Makita circular saw is the mirror image of this one, with the blade on the right hand side of the handle. Typically, when I use a circular saw, I place the piece being cut on a surface or set of sawhorses in front of me with the section to be cut off hanging off the right hand side. Then I can hold the workpiece steady with my left hand or knee while the large part of the sole plate of the saw stays on the work that is held to the table. The cut off piece falls away to the right. If you try to use this saw that way, with the saw blade on the left hand side of the handle, only the small sliver of the soleplate to the left of the blade is resting on the stable part of the workpiece. The large portion of the soleplate under the motor is resting on the part of the workpiece that will drop away when the cut is finished. This makes it very hard to control the saw as you finish the cut. In addition to ruining the cut, this useage could be considered dangerous.

Make sure you really want a left-handed saw before buying this one.

I built the interior of a log cabin in Vermont this past summer. Did it all with just the 18 volt battery powered tools from Makita like this Jig saw. They all worked perfectly. They may not be the cheapest tools but they certainly are one of the best. This Jig Saw is solid and powerful and the battery last longer than it takes to charge one up.

This was an addition to a 6 tool kit I purchased earlier. The saw is a welcome addition, it is easy to use and has plenty of power. I would like to see a speed limiting dial and the option of ordering with a rip fence. A good supplemental tool but anyone doing a lot of work should consider a good corded saw first, preferably a Bosch or Festool.

This is a very fine tool. The blade change is quick with no tools needed. There is a small led light and a blower to help you see the work. It is compact, even with the battery, and balances well. It comes with replaceable no-mar footplate and anti-splinter inserts. The only drawback is you still need an allan wrench to change the bevel angle of the sole plate.

I really appreciate having this tool around. It's funny how many times I find myself using this for odd jobs or DIY projects. I use it more than I thought I would. I've cut metal hollow core doors, luan, PVC, small tree limbs (I know, poor use for this fine tool), etc. It is a bit pricy, but when you consider working without the constraint of wires, it's worth it. I've used it in my attic where there was no easy access to power. The LED was also quite useful there. To me it seems to drain the battery quickest out of my Makita LXT tools. Better have a spare.

This is a great deal for the money if you already have the batteries and charger. This saw does not have the light which I miss and didn't come with a rip fence or a case; it's a light duty saw. If it's your only saw, you'll be sorry; it just doesn't have the torque of a corded saw and will choke in a slight bind while cutting plywood sheets or pressure treated 4x stock where the blade's burried; situations where even a homeowner corded saw will power through. If the blade is touching your work, the saw can't start. It just grunts coming up short of enough torque to start the cut. Anything but a perfect cutting angle in a perfectly straight cut will bind and stop the saw.

The trigger safety interlock is aggravating! I buy pro model corded saws to eliminate that dumb switch, but you need it in a battery saw if you store it with the battery installed; like everyone does. I have incredibly large hands and still find that trigger interlock a stretch to reach; ergonomically, it's in the wrong place for a comfortable grip. There is no charge level indication unless you put the battery on the charger; then you can only tell if it's > or < 80%.

All that said, I really do love the saw and find myself grabbing it first. The cut line on the table is dead on accurate; first saw I've ever had that was. It's light and fast and under normal conditions you can't outwork the batteries. I framed and sheathed two 48' gable ends and cut 2x4's and 5/8" plywood all day. I changed batteries twice and the battery was recharged well before the one in use died; I consider that completely acceptable run time.

I wouldn't expect to use it for long rips (straight or beveled) or for anything greater than 2x, but for anything short of full-on framing, I'll grab this saw out of my truck first; it's just awesome not to have to deal with cords and extension cords!

"Great saw for the Money" 2009-01-08

This saw is much better than my Black and Decker Firestorm saw. I also think it is the same as the more expensive BSS610Z model. The owners manual is the same for both. The specs for both look identical except for a few ounces in weight. I did find one thing different.No blade brake.For the price still a good deal.
