As far as I can tell, the item I was shipped was not manufactured by Makita. It arrived and I use it... and perhaps the company name on the paperwork is some sort of subsidiary, but I was sort of expecting something a bit more rugged feeling. All plastic all the time and not what I would call a precision design. Feels cheap, but so far, it does what it is supposed to do. Perhaps all protective helmet combo units of this type FEEL cheap. But perhaps not? This one does. That DOES MAKE IT LIGHT however. Perhaps that was the tradeoff...

Helmet works well, screen is good and hearing protection adequate. The plastic webbing that attaches the helmet to your head occasionally slips from some of the slots that attach it to the helmet. A little duct tape solved the issue. Good value for the price.

Have been using this saw for a few weeks now rebuilding my deck. Works great. Excellent view of the cut line making cuts very accurately. Ergonomically the hand grips feel very secure and it's very light and easy to handle. Electric brake was a must for me, work in an ER where we see a lot of saw injuries, amputations, etc. No major flaws I've identified yet. I don't want to speak too soon, but I haven't had much problems with kickbacks or binding so far, but I'm very careful about my cutting technique and the materials I'm cutting and I'm hoping that that will minimize kickbacks.

I decided to upgrade from my 30 yr old B&D saw and almost bought the basic Milwaukee. Then I noticed they made one with a brake- which is a great idea. So I looked at the Milwaukee with brake. Then I noticed Makita also made one with a brake and indecision set in: I could not decide which brand to buy with the brake. To help with my decision I went to HD and looked at both- it then became an easy decision to buy the Makita 5007MGA even though it was slightly more expensive.



Looking at the Makita you can tell that the designers and engineers put some thought into it- it's not just a basic hammer-like power tool like the Milwaukee; instead the Makita has well thought out, almost sexy, "extra" detailed features for the user. The base is cast and has a nice thick lip on the blade side- the Milwaukee is stamped from ~.12" alum. All the levers on the Makita have nice rubber grips on them; the quick stops on the bevel adjustment on the Makita is also a great feature. Sure, you don't need these little features, but it shows that someone was thinking about more than mounting motor on a plate. The Milwaukee is the Chevy Malibu; the Makita is the Lexus; either will get the job done, but the Makita is a nicer tool. Oh, and this Lexus is unfortunately made in China, but the quality is perfect.



The saw has plenty of power and is as safe as any other saw so ignore the one bad review here wrt safety. The brake stops the blade in about half the time as my old B&D with no brake: ~3 seconds vs 6 (just counting off).



Negatives: As others have stated, the case is too small- you have to kink the cord at the strain relief which is not a good idea- the case needs to be 3" longer. The rip fence is too short to be of much use; this is ironic because the space for it in the case will accomodate a fence almost 2" longer. Fix those two things and it's perfect. It's odd that with all the detailed design put into the saw they missed glaringly obvious poor features on the case and fence. The case could also use some additional blade storage space although it's fine for at least two spare blades (all I have).

I was going to buy this saw until I noticed that the rear left corner of the baseplate is chopped off. When you are using a guide to make a straight cut that part of the baseplate is quite useful to keep the cut straight as the blade exits the material. None of the pictures of the saw show the rear left corner. I went to a Makita parts website and looked at the drawing for the baseplate. I see that some other saw manufacturers that have cast versus machined baseplates are doing the same thing. Makita did the same thing on the 5008MGA, the 8.25" inch version of this product. I guess I'll have to buy dewalt or milwaukee instead. What a shame -- this is otherwise a really great saw. I'd rate it at 5 stars if the baseplate was just rectangular without the missing corner. Makes me wonder why they did that? To save a few pennies worth of magnesium? Makita reps I'd love to hear the reasoning for that decision!

This is just a all around great circular saw. Starts relatively smooth, the ergonomics of the handles and levers are top tier, and the LED light/saw dust blower do a really good job of keeping you on the cut line. Adjustments are easy. The inclusion of the rip guide is a nice touch (other saws like some DeWalts expect you to pay extra for them). Very pleased w/ this purchase.

 "A quality chainsaw" 2008-11-04

I was looking for a saw that approached the quality of a professional-level machine, since it became evident as I attempted to clean up after Hurricane Ike that my small gas and electric homeowner saws were not up to the task. I selected the DCS510-18 because it was avaiable through Prime, touted its low vibration and high power-to-weight ratio, and it was branded by Makita. I knew the quality of their products, but wasn't aware of Makita making non-electric power tools. I gambled to an extent that they would not tarnish their brand by selling subpar products, even if manufactured by others.



The saw lives up to the power and vibration promises, and is almost elegant in its appearance, like one would picture a chainsaw made by BMW. I found that German elegance was not a false impression in the very useful first review written for this saw. I'm writing my own review as much to praise that first reviewer for the very useful information he provided as to address the quality of the Makita chainsaw. He identified the actual manufacturer and model number, and provided some very useful suggestions - which I have followed - to optimize the saw's operation.

This is a very powerful saw for the weight. A comparable Stihl is about 50% heavier and when you have a lot of wood to cut the lighter weight is worth the extra money. The saw has served me well cutting up many > 30" oak, maple and ash trunks and lots of smaller trees and fallen timber. The chain oil dispenser is leaking a bit but the saw has also been used extremely hard for several seasons. I have worn out 4 or 5 chains already and I have switched to a carbide tip chain (Really worth its hefty price!)

The saw looks really beat up but still starts on the first pull and runs like a champ. Only complaint: woodchips and sawdust packs inside the safety brake housing and can interfere with smooth running so it needs to be taken apart and cleaned out regularly.

This saw is a serious tool in the class of the midsize Husqvarna and Stihl.

Great saw! Took me a while to find a case for it since it would not fit the Stihl or Husky cases. I even tried the large boxy cases. I ended up getting a soft Echo case for it. There is some weirdness in the manual about using 2 different sized files for sharpening the chain but other than that it's not much different from other saws. It has a little plate that can be used to divert hot air to the carb for cold weather use. Though this is a large powerfull saw it is light and manageble. In the first tankfull I made about 30 cuts thru some really large oak logs!



I might get out there and use it again today!

From the reviews that I read, I was concerned about my ability to operate this chain saw safely. When I read the owners manual, I was even more concerned. However having used it now for a few days taking down 4 large Ash trees and cutting them into 18" rounds, I am happy to say that while it certainly is a lot more saw than my old Craftsman 18" 46cc saw, it is no more difficult to handle and control. While it is not Makita's fault, I did spend a bit of time looking for fully synthetic 2 cycle oil for the 50 to 1 mix, but I was able to locate a supply nearby. Using 91 octane gas is also a new twist that caused me to buy an additional gas can. However, I think it is worth it as the saw seems to run really clean. I definitely think it was worth the money.

As my 5th chainsaw, I must say that the Makita DCS6401-20 has been by far the best saw I have ever used. Since I purchased it, I have cut down about 30 trees of various size to include a couple large ones. Eventhough this was a little bit more expensive than the comprable Stihl, I am so glad I spent the extra money and bought this one. The Makita DCS6401-20 is a durable, powerful, professional grade saw - and not to mention it looks pretty bad***! I would recommend this saw to any homeowner in need of a saw for heavy cutting.

Like some of you, I struggled about which miter saw to by for some time. On one hand, a simple non-sliding saw with a 10" or 12" inch blade seems to be alright, and the pricing is reasonable. On the other hand, what if I need to make wider cuts? Is the higher cost of a decent sliding miter saw worth it? In this case, damn straight. This "little" gem is exactly what this 1st time home owner / avid do-it-yourself-er remodel-er needed. For 99% of what I need to do - decking, raised garden beds, shelving, coping, trim, etc. this little power house is perfect. Just, my opinion by the way :)

1/2 the dust created 1/16 dia blade only makes 1/2 the dust to begin with and almost complete collection when hooked to a vac.

The smoothest miter angle table of any saw EVER.

super easy to carry one handed,

Dead on accurate (the smaller the blade the less deflection).



The only concerns was it does not come with lock notch for the travel position, I speculate that this is so you don't lock it at 59 rather than 45



Also you must cut larger base and crown on the flat, for base this is almost easier once you use it a time or 2. the instructions come with a chart for setting crown on the flat for all angle 0-180.



As a professional remodeler who doesn't cut crown often this is the best take along saw you can buy, and it will be the only saw you use 97% of the time. so buy it and barrow your buddies behemoth on the rare occasion you need a bigger blade.

Small, light, incredibly clean cuts. I had to adjust my bevel stops out of the box, but the small blade and a 6" engineer's square made it a snap. Smooth action and portable size have made it essential, my 10" sits at home while this one travels job to job. As a finish guy I rarely need to cut anything over 2" thick, I cut mouldings on the flat. This saw is perfect, you're crazy to consider anything else. Do yourself a favor if you buy this, build a small table with stock supports around 8" deep, the small supports on the saw allow wide material to roll off post cut.

This has become a very big part of my work, I have the Makita 12" compound but found that this is great for doing misc pick up work or smaller jobs when taking out the big dog is too much. It's really nice when you need to move alot from room to room as well as up and down stairs.

Cutting smaller trim on it is alot more comfortable as well compared to the 12". This saw has plenty of power, nice brake system and is actually nice to have side by side on the job with the other saws so you don't need to keep changing one saws angle all the time. It's just plain convenient to own!

This saw gives you cuts as smooth as glass in oak, pine and hard maple with almost no tearout on the bottom side. Since it has only 2" of vertical capacity I believe that its primary usage is in cabinet making. At least that is how I am using it. Its sliding mechanism is extremely smooth with no play. It gives you cuts up to 12" wide which are perfectly straight with no 'climbing' effect. Out of the box the blade was square to the table and the fence. I think that a table could have been a bit larger but my saw is mounted on a stand so it is a non-issue for me. Another possible detraction is that nobody(?) but Makita makes blades in 7-1/2" size but thus far the supplied blade proved (about 25 bucks if purchased separately) to be very good. Makita also could have provided two clamps for each side of the blade instead of just one. But I have yet to find a perfect tool...

This looked like a high quality tool but the one I received in the mail came in a banged up box, poorly packed, and had clearly been sitting on a shelf gathering dust for a while. When I saw it's condition I looked up the age of the saw by the serial number and found that it was over two years old. I returned it and got a full refund, then bought one locally instead.

I bought this saw to cut all the pressure treated lumber for my deck since my other tools (except handsaws) were not going to be up for the task. I picked this saw over the others available based on reviews from several woodworking sites. Every review site seemed to like a different saw but in general all agreed that the Skil was the best overall.



I passed on competitors models for several reasons: well reviewed Skil saws were too heavy and had overlooked faults that bothered me. The Dewalts, Boschs, etc all had quirky features. The Ridgid was excellent but had a diamond arbor which limited the blades you could use. The Makita was new and it replaced the outgoing model which was well received so I went with the 5377MG.



Pros:



- accurate cuts

- angle stop easy to set

- lightweight

- excellent ergonomics

- nice blade included (a Makita trademark)

- reinforced baseplate



Cons:



- no rip fence included

- startup kick

- heavier than a sidewinder

- slightly underpowered



I'm hesitant to call the saw underpowered because it's more powerful that my other equipment but I would bet that the heavier saws have more power when the saw is pushed hard.



Always get the black A-94530 blade. It's sharp, lasts a long time and is coated to prevent binding.



The Makita 5377MG uses a heavier duty rip fence that is gold colored. For some reason, Makita does not include a rip fence or securing screw with the 5377MG. These are the part numbers you'll need for that saw:



- Rip Fence 165153-3

- M6x15 screw 251858- 2



The screw is black and matched that older style Makita saws not the newer padded blue screws. Do not buy the skinny 164095-8 rip fence by mistake.



Note: if you buy this saw in the 5377MGX version, you'll receive a ballistic nylon blue carpenter's belt instead of a case. There is also a Makita 5477NB now available that is a stripped down version of this saw.

I was thinking that this was going to be too heavy for most of my applications, but it is NOT! You don't have to be The Hulk to use it. It cuts through wet lumber like butter, keeps a very straight line without the guide. It looks like a 57 dodge or chevy. It has the beam hanger (if you set it on ground it rolls over) which is awesome. I freaking love this thing! Nice thin kerf blade comes with it. I don't think I'd go with the other top brands for this, it is super light comparatively.

I'd love to know what parts that other guy had magically fall off, because I can't find a single fit or finish flaw with mine. This thing is built like a tank, but doesn't weigh you down too badly. I'm a bit concerned about the longevity of the lower guard spring, but for right now, it works fine.



I chose this over the Bosch worm drive model purely because of the lack of need to drain and flush any oil out of the gearbox with kerosene, and I have no regrets. It ploughs right through wood, doesn't jump around when it starts up and has a really steady base. Not sure what else you'd need a circular saw to do.

 "Blade lock defective. What happened Makita?!" 2010-01-06

Before any tool purchase, i always do my homework and research any potential purchase. So, when i was in the market for a recipro saw, Makita was right up there on my list. Makita's have good reviews on Amazon, among other places. So, their Reciprocating Saw seemed like a no-brainer for me. I already own a Makita double bevel sliding compound saw and am extremely impressed with the tool.



Amazon had one at my front door within record time (Kudo's Amazon!). Opened the box, plugged it in, and was happy for 5 minutes until i twisted the blade lock to "unlock" so i could insert the blade supplied by Makita. However, once in the "unlock" position, the locking component decided not to retract into the "locked" position. That's it. It wasn't moving. Surprised, after looking into it further, i decided it was smarter to get a replacement from Amazon then to tinker with the defective unit. When the replacement arrived, again, i opened the box and, to my surprise, (2 surprises now if your counting), the 2nd replacement had the same exact issue! The blade locking mechanism was already seized in the "unlock" position!!



I am both surprised and confused. Makita's a good, reliable name. I've read the reviews for the saw. My father has used Makita tools and recommended them to me. I own a of a beast miter saw made by Makita (which i love). What happened with Makita's Quality Contol process?! I would like to think it was a defect in the manufacturing process when Makita's made the batch and it won't happen again. However, it happen twice to me. Not a third time.



I am returning both initial and replacement saws and have already purchased a Milwaukee 12amp from the local HD. I had to put out a couple more dollars for the Milwaukee, but the Milwaukee has a 5 yr warranty, it's IS90000 certified, made in USA, and the blade lock component on the Milwaukee does what it's supposed to.



I'd like to forget this experience with Makita.

Reciprocating saws are awe-inspiring little toys. This on lives up to the Makita brand: solid like a rock, good grip, sturdy blade change mechanism, no nonsense control of speed, angle of attack and enough room to feel reasonably safe while working with it. This is a demolition tool, not intended for your fine cabinetry work; it will eat thru a steel pipe in 30 seconds and rip across a 2x4 in seconds (nails and all) whether you want it to or not.

Like another reviewer, I bought this based on Fine Homebuilding's test of reciprocating saws. It's my first recip, thought I've borrowed others to use before. This has a nice heft to it, is very comfortable to hold and operate, and works like a champ. The day after it arrived I used it to tear through some walls so I could gain access to the attic space behind them, and then reframe the opening. It went through the studs a little slower than some other saws, and the blade is only just long enough to reach through ½" drywall and the wide edge of a 2x4, so I had to make a couple of recuts. If I did rough framing or renovation for a living, I think I'd go with Makita's top of the line saw, which got Fine Homebuilding's best rating. But for DIY home renos, this is exactly what you need, and a great value.

I bought this saw because of the "Best Value" rating that it received in the November 2005 issue of Fine Homebuilding. I am very satisfied with it! I especially love the quick blade change system. I have nothing but good to say about Makita tools. I own an arsenal of them. They are, without exception, solid, dependable, comfortable, easy to use and very durable. I am hoping that the qaulity of Makita tools remains high. As long as it is, I will continue to purchase them.
